Des Moines will host its first Open Streets event on Sunday September 29th from
noon to 4:00 p.m. on University Avenue with free activities for all ages
ranging from foursquare to granny basketball. The event entitled DSMove is a Des
Moines version of a national effort to promote neighborhoods, local businesses,
physical activity, health and a sustainable future.
University Avenue
will be closed between 23rd and 41st streets. The
well-traveled street will be converted to a soccer pitch, basketball court,
skate park, construction zone, playground, yoga studio, dance floor, concert
hall, classroom and extra-long block party.
Attractions
include the world’s largest bike, disk golf,
art works, recumbent bike test rides, hula hoop lessons, Isiserettes, drum
circles, great coffee, freedom from training wheels lessons, and more.
DSMove is a
project brought to fruition by the Des Moines Bicycle Collective, Des Moines
Parks & Recreation, Drake University Drake Neighborhood Association, and
supportive partnerships with local businesses, churches, and nonprofit
institutions.
There will be ample opportunities to engage in
free family fun, support local businesses, and connect with the neighborhood.
