Passionate beer nerds united as Firetrucker Brewery in Ankeny’s Uptown district officially opened its doors at noon on Independence Day this year. Poised with fresh-brewed concoctions ready for the world to taste, the brewery was booming on Friday afternoon of opening weekend.
Arriving just after noon on opening day, my drinking companion and I were greeted by a room full of beer lovers anticipating trying one of the three Firetrucker signature beers on tap: the Steam Engine Common, First Responder Red, or Brunout Brown. Still feeling groggy from the night before’s premature Fourth of July celebrations, the Steam Engine, a lighter lager at 4.2 percent alcohol by volume (ABV), seemed like a safe bet for the first brew of the day.
