The very popular Bill Riley Trail will close from June 1 - July 30.

Much needed work will be done to raise the railroad underpass, level and realign a dangerous hairpin turn.

"What we are going to do is add a safety rail and realign that curve to make it safer," said Des Moines Parks and Recreation Marketing Supervisor Jen Fletcher.

Work to be done will also address areas of concern for flooding.

"This project will alleviate that," Fletcher said.

People out walking, jogging or biking know the temporary closure will affect their summer.

Trail users KCCI spoke with support the decision and understand it's about safety.

"You gotta take care of the bike trails, that's all there is to it," said avid bike rider, George Adams.

The trail will close from Walnut Creek to Waterworks Park.
