Cedar Rapids installed an in-street bike corral Thursday morning.

The place to park bicycles now sits on Third Street southeast between the two parklets, which are areas where people can sit outside to eat. The corral can hold up to eight bikes and provides a safe spot for people to lock their bikes. Organizers say this corral will also keep drivers from trying to illegally park near the parklets.

“One of the issues with these parklets and the space that (between them) is that we’re having motorcyclists and other cars try to utilize this space,” said Brandon Whyte, a multimodal transportation planner for the Corridor Metropolitan Planning Organization.

The Iowa Bicycle Coalition says Cedar Rapids is the second city to have a bike corral. The city plans to move it to the Ice Arena during the winter.
