Dallas Center bicyclist killed in early-morning crash

By KATE McGINTY REGISTER STAFF WRITER September 24, 2006 A Dallas Center bicyclist was killed early Sunday after being hit by a car, the Dallas County Sheriff's Office said. John Maxwell, 45, was riding his bike at 5:18 a.m. when he was struck by a car at County Road 16 and 270th Street, about two miles south of Dallas Center, according to the sheriff's officer news release. Maxwell was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the car, Matthew Merical, 22, of Urbandale, was arrested and charged with drunken driving, according to the Dallas County Sheriff’s Office. It is Merical's second OWI charge, according to court documents. The sheriff’s office and the Iowa State Patrol are investigating the accident.
