Proposed bridge removal on Iowa 415 over Northwest 66th Avenue in Polk County to be discussed in Des Moines Feb. 5 January 26, 2015

AMES, Iowa – Jan. 26, 2015 – The Iowa Department of Transportation will hold a public information meeting Thursday, Feb. 5, to discuss the proposed bridge removal on Iowa 415 carrying traffic over Northwest 66th Avenue, 2.1 miles north of Interstate 80, in Polk County. The project involves constructing an intersection with traffic signals, removing the existing ramps, and providing left- and right-turn lanes at the intersection.

Iowa 415 would remain open to traffic. Traffic on Northwest 66th Avenue would be detoured during construction using Northwest 26th Street, Iowa 160, and U.S. 69. For more information, see the website listed below.

BIKEIOWA NOTE:  This is a nice low-traffic backway from Ankeny and Johnston to Margo Frankel Woods and to head to the East side of Des Moines, Altoona and Bondurant. It is nice there now going under 2nd ave, but we understand the bridge is in dire need of repair and something has to be done. We don't have a strong opinion either way, but wanted everyone to be aware.

All interested persons are invited to attend this meeting anytime between 5 and 6:30 p.m. at the Easter Seals Camp Lodge, 401 NE 66th Ave., Des Moines. The meeting will be conducted utilizing an open forum format. Iowa DOT staff will be present to informally discuss the proposed improvements. No formal presentation will be made.

The meeting space is accessible for persons with disabilities. However, if you require special accommodations at the meeting, please notify the Iowa DOT contact listed below by Feb. 2.

For general information regarding the proposed improvements or public meeting, contact Tony Gustafson, P.E., assistant district engineer, Iowa DOT District 1 Office, 1020 S. Fourth St., Ames, Iowa 50010, phone 515-239-1635 or 800-899-0623, email tony.gustafson@dot.iowa.gov.

I love taking this road as it's the most direct route to get to Bondurant and the Chichaqua Trail, but there is a longer, but workable detour using trails through Ankeny. It would be really nice of them to leave the shoulders rideable like they are now.
