BRUCE BROWN RECAP

The Mullet Fall Classic version 2013 is in the books. Mother nature -
for how many years now? - was very, very, very kind again this year. I
don't think I could have imagined better course conditions after the 48
hours of rain leading up to it. Looks like we had 169 racers this year
on a day that included a cyclocross race and questionable weather that
may have kept some away.

I didn't get a chance to thank
everyone properly when the big crowd was there due to the wait for the
results. So, here goes: A big thanks to my Indianola crew of Bob
Matthews, Al Boone, Bryce Gilbert, and Ron Cooney. A huge thanks to
Angie Fry Boyens for organizing the potluck. Thank you to Melinda Reese,
Tara Starr, and Lisa Seidenkranz for their wonderful help at check-in
and registration. Thank you ladies!!!!! Also I want to thank Elaine
LeMay Kay for T-Shirt distribution and organization. And thanks to
veteran Mullet helper Nick Woolley who makes it down every year from
Webster City to kick in tireless hours of physical help - all with a
smile and great attitude!!! It takes a lot to pull off a big event and I
really could not have done it without your help. And thank you "Ed"! Ed
made a garbage run, and then later a charcoal run for the 150 hot dogs
that arrived for the potluck.

Also, thank you so much to the
Iowa Trail Bombers and their leader Stephen Schmidt for being there,
providing the course marshals, tear off tag collectors, and running our
first ever kids race which was great to see them going through the
maze!!! We've got to get more kids races going at all of our Iowa events
for sure.

And thanks to Sterling Heise and Rassy's for the use
of the P.A. System, and providing gift certificates for the Juniors and
the Comp class (Comp winners - I forgot to give you your certificates,
so look for those in the mail from me).

Thanks to our USAC
Officials, Jeff Mertz, Bruce Pesch, and Deisha Reynolds. It's not an
easy task scoring an event with multiple races going on all at the same
time.

Thanks to Josh Shipman, Park Manager, and his DNR staff
for allowing us to use the venue. It's a lovely park and hopefully,
after the clean up, we left in good shape for all park users.

A
final thanks to all those who chipped in and helped with clean up,
course tear down, loading, garbage patrol and an excellent effort to get
the park back into shape.

I forgot to announce the winner of the Mullet award for this year. Todd Shenker took top honors for his man

Mountain Biking

Distance - 6.7 mile loop (1 lap for CAT 3, 2 laps for CAT 2, 3 laps for CAT 2 COMP, 4 laps for CAT 1; as many laps as possible for Marathon

The season ending race for the 2013 Iowa Mountain Bike Championship Series will once again be held at Lake Ahquabi State Park.  It will feature a Marathon Category as well as the traditional Category 1, 2 and 3 XC Mountain Bike Races.  Readers of Momentum Magazine selected the 2012 Mullet Fall Classic as the top mountain bike race.  This is one event you don't want to miss this year!!

New for 2013:  this will be a USA Cycling sanctioned event and has been designated as the State Championship Mountain Bike Race for the Iowa XC categories.  What a way to end the season with the state championship!!  Winners will qualify to race at the 2014 USA Cycling Nationals.

The Mullet Fall Classic Mountain Bike Race will feature a 3+ Hour Marathon (the marathon race starts at 11:00 a.m. and any lap begun before the clock hits 3:00 p.m. can be completed and counts!!!), and of course, the usual 2013 IMBCS XC race categories of Expert (4 laps), Comp (3 laps), Sport (2 laps), and Beginner (1 lap) to battle for the Mullet Classic Fall podium spots in their respective XC race categories to be crowned as State Champions for Iowa.  Those races will take off in waves beginning at 1:00 p.m.  Toss in a FAT BIKE 2 lap race as one of the waves as well (not a USAC sanctioned category, but you'll be racing for prizes).  A short kids race for those 10 and under will begin at 3:30 pm - treats for all kids after crossing the finish line.

This race is Iowa's very own backwoods, super fast, fat tire XC race held on a course loop that rolls on the multi-use cross country ski, snowmobile, and hiking trail that circles Lake Ahquabi. This year features a 6.7 mile race loop that utilizes backwood sections of the wooded trails throughout Lake Ahquabi State Park to make for a scenic race filled with unique challenges.

There will be a post-race potlock, party, and festivities to put a nice stamp to the end of Oktoberfest.  Bring your bike.  Bring your hunger.  Bring your thirst.  'Nuff said.

Route

The 6.7 mile loop includes a trip around Lake Ahquabi's multi-use trail with additional sections that include backwood trails. You will encounter gravel, dirt, roots, ruts, grass, logs, wooden bridges, climbs, fast descents and the best nature has to offer on this scenic course. The loop will be the perfect test of one's fitness with all of the full throttle speed and all of the climbing, but will not be technical in nature to scare off the entry level racer. In fact, this will be a perfect venue for first timers and experts alike. Come and join the fun!
