The Le Mars City Council awarded the bid for the PlyWood Trail Phase 1A Project at its July 6 meeting.

Bids had been received and opened July 1, with Mc Clure Engineering reviewing the bids.

On Tuesday, Brett Langley of Mc Clure Engineering recommended awarding the contract to Godbersen-Smith for the low bid of $1,513,754.24.

Construction cost estimate was $1,469,788.

There were three bids received for the project. The other two bids came in at $1,595,249.55 and $2,478,079.41.

“We were happy with the prices that the bids came in as. They were 3 percent over the engineer’s estimate. With all the price increases and material cost increases we’re seeing I think we’re pretty happy with this,” Langley said.

Langley then responded to council member Clark Goodchild’s question of is it standard for a trail project to be done when it is not connecting to a current section.

“In general, no. The goal would be to construct an entire trail from start to finish. But this is definitely not your standard trail project. This is a pretty long trail from start to finish, the end goal of it. I would say it’s very standard for trails to be constructed in segments like we’re doing here,” he said.

“Trails all over central Iowa and eastern Iowa, many are on their phase four or phase five or six and are continuing to add pieces and request funding and build it similar to how we are planning to build this one,” he continued.
