More is being added to the network of trails in Sioux Center.

The latest section to receive attention from the city sits by Sioux Center Health, and will go from the loop by the pond just to its south on to the Woodbridge addition along 13th Avenue Southeast. It will measure about three-tenths of a mile.

Sioux Center’s trail system measures a total of 7 ½ miles long without this new section, according to Darryl Ten Pas, who serves on the Sioux Center Trails Council.

Work on this portion of the trail has been ongoing since the spring.

A ribbon-cutting ceremony will be held for the new section in the future, and the city council will hear about it at an August meeting, Ten Pas said.

“It’s going to be a great addition, especially with events this past year with the coronavirus,” Ten Pas said. “These trails are getting more usage, which is a great way for community members to get out.”

As more is added, the community can continue to enjoy the benefits the trails bring, he said, such as recreation and for use to get to school, amenities and even work while staying off the roads.

The social aspect of the trails shouldn’t be forgotten, either, he said, adding, “Yesterday (Sunday, July 12), I ran into somebody who had been biking the last 30 months. He was from Florida and did 160 miles yesterday from Corsica, SD, to Sioux Center.”

“We’ve been doing little sections every year and spending dollars to improve the blacktop out to Sandy Hollow and fixing our first section we did all those years ago,” Ten Pas said.
