In the past week, we’ve reported on two accidents involving young cyclists and a vehicle. One accident happened in Waverly and another in Waterloo. Both, authorities tell us, were due to cyclist error.

While hearing about these accidents, we learned the Cedar Valley Cyclists are starting “Intro to Road Cycling Classes.” They say both drivers and cyclists need to follow the rules of the road, but not every cyclist knows what to do, especially if they’re used to trails.

Board Member Eric Penning says, “If it’s a cyclist that really knows what they’re doing on the road, or if it’s a kid that darts out in front of a car, it’s a bad situation all the time, and unfortunately it’s becoming more common.”

During the Intro to Road Cycling Class, there will be a bike ride, and the group will go over cycling communication, hand signals, and laws.

This class is free for anyone to attend. The next class is Saturday, June 29th. It starts at 10:00 a.m. and will meet at Waterloo Bicycle Works.
