Hiawatha is preparing for future growth with some of the city's bike lanes on North Center Point Road.

A portion of the street is two lanes wide, plus bicycle lanes.

Those extra lanes for bikes are right next to the existing Cedar Valley Nature Trail.

The city says the street has the capability of being converted into five lanes in the future.

City Engineer John Bender says the city did a traffic study and for now, two lanes handle the traffic volume.

"It all depends on the development," Bender said, "the three-lane will work very well for now and as this area is really developed we will watch it and watch the traffic volumes and see at that point where the five-lane might become necessary."

The city will re-evaluate the traffic volume on N Center Point Road every year.
