NOTE: This collision took place in September 2016. Tracking for Ride of Silence.

An 18-year-old cyclist was seriously injured Thursday morning when Des Moines police say he left a sidewalk and ran into a garbage truck.

At 8:04 a.m., the cyclist was heading east on the sidewalk along Euclid Avenue. At the same time a Waste Management garbage truck was about to make a turn southbound onto Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, said Sgt. Paul Parizek, a spokesman for the Des Moines Police Department. The cyclist, who police have not identified, left the sidewalk and crashed into the back side of the truck. He fell beneath the truck and it appeared that the rear wheels rolled over him.

The cyclist was taken to Iowa Methodist Medical Center.

Parizek said the truck driver likely won't be charged since he had the right of way. The cyclist wasn't crossing at a crosswalk.

It's unclear whether the cyclist was wearing a helmet, Parizek said, who didn't see one at the scene.
