On Wednesday May 27, 2009, City Council will vote on the
Bicycle Friendly Community Action Plan resolution. This is
a resolution approving the steps to improve conditions for
bicycling in order to achieve a Bicycle Friendly Community
status.
Per direction from City Council, the City of Cedar Rapids
seeks to attain Bicycle Friendly Community status. The
League of American Bicyclists recognizes states,
communities and businesses for their efforts to promote
bicycling. The Public Works Department – Traffic
Engineering Division in cooperation with the Bicycle
Advisory Committee reviewed the requirements for
recognition and developed an Action Plan to meet these
requirements.
The Public Works Department recommended the approval of an
Action Plan to obtain Bicycle Friendly Community status
this year.
Some of the steps in the Action Plan to improve conditions
for bicycling in our community include:
• Provide safe and convenient bicycle access to all
parts of the community.
• Establish information programs to promote bicycling.
• Make the City a model employer by encouraging
bicycle use among its employees.
• Ensure City policies, plans, codes and programs
create a more bicycle friendly community.
• Educate all road users to share the road and
interact safely.
• Enforce traffic laws to improve the safety and
comfort of all users.
• Develop programs to encourage bicycle use in
neighborhoods.
• Promote intermodal travel between public transport
and bicycles.
