Iowa Great Places brings in $435,668 By: Lacey Jacobs, Ledger staff writer Christmas came early for Fairfield this year. As part of the Iowa Great Places initiative, a total of $435,668 has been awarded to local projects. Advertisement Fairfield submitted eight applications as part of the first Great Places cycle of funding, and notification was given Wednesday that six of the projects have received partial or full funding. "This is great news," said Fairfield Mayor Ed Malloy. "Fairfield did very well." The downtown streetscape project has been awarded the full amount requested, $200,000 for nodes, crosswalks, lighting and work in Howard Park. Malloy said designs are currently being completed, and the projects should go to bid in 30 days with the expectation that construction will start in September. Slightly less than $1 million has already been earmarked by the city to fund portions of the streetscape project. The Jefferson County Loop Trail also has been granted the requested amount. The $50,000 grant will go toward construction of a three-mile stretch of trail in the northwest section of town. Funding in the amount of $25,000 will go toward the first phase of the city's bikeway and walkway plan, which is the completion of a shared eight-foot bicycle and pedestrian sidewalk on B Street from Waterworks Park Road to Stone Avenue.
