A Westside boy is back at home recovering following a truck/bicycle accident on U.S. Highway 30 earlier this week.
According to the Crawford County Sheriff’s Office, the incident occurred at approximately 1:16 p.m. on Monday, April 29, near the Sinclair Gas Station at the intersection with Eagle Street. Authorities say a 2022 Dodge Ram 2500, operated by 66-year-old John Michael McGuire of Somers, was traveling eastbound on the highway and towing a car trailer.
McGuire told law enforcement he slowed down after seeing two children riding bicycles on the south side of the highway. As the truck passed, one of the kids, identified as seven-year-old Z.K., entered the roadway and got between the truck and trailer.
The boy was transported to St. Anthony Regional Hospital in Carroll by Carroll County Emergency Medical Services with serious, but not-life-threatening, injuries. The boy was later airlifted to a Des Moines hospital for treatment of a broken femur. The child is now back home and is recovering.
In a post to social media yesterday (Thursday), Sheriff Jim Steinkuehler says, “When what could of been a bad situation, turns out to be a happy ending for all involved, it don’t get any better than that. Thanks to Carroll County Ambulance, the Westside Fire & Rescue, and a witness that had dash cam video, that captured the incident on camera.”
