Description

This is a very nice, easy, mostly flat, paved trail. As of May 5, 2019, there is one area between Valeria and the South Skunk River where erosion from the adjacent stream is threatening to undermine the trail. There is a steep drop just a couple feet north of the trail where the edge has eroded and the authorities have placed some warning barricades, but at this time the trail is passable at that point.

Closed August 2020 due to Derecho. Large trees down all along the trail from Baxter to Bondurant. Canopy looks destroyed in the Mingo area. The bridges might be out as well.

Rode this trail from Baxter to the South Skunk River yesterday. Very nice, easy, mostly flat, paved trail. Trail is repaired and they did good job. Very nice to have it back

Trail is totally open/complete from Baxter to Des Moines (E29th Street). Trail from East of Bondurant to Des Moines is all new concrete pavement. Trail from East of Bondurant to Baxter is mostly asphalt, but its condition varies. There is a section between Mingo and Baxter that is Gravel. This is fine compacted gravel, but is much rougher then most surfaces. This section of gravel is about 4 miles long. Distance from E29 in Des Moines to Baxter is about 28 Miles. Even with the section of gravel, I highly recommend trail. Lots of beauty in the Chicaqua Valley.

Paving is 95% done from Bondurant to just east of Berwick. There are some gaps so you need to be careful. Especially at intersections. Only about half of the dirtwork is done.
