he Active Living and Transportation Commission is looking into the city's bicycle ordinance and studying if it needs updating.

The commission recently met with Mason City Police Chief Jeff Brinkley to discuss the proposed changes, and will also be meeting with City Administrator Aaron Burnett and other agencies.

Community Program Director Angela Determan says that one issue that could be part of the updated ordinance is the rise of electric-powered bicycles.

"Making sure that our ordinance has information in there on what is the guidelines for using a bike. Obviously, whether you're on the roadway, you follow the rules of the road, no matter if it's an electronic bike or if it's just a ride share bike or your home bike."

Determan added that the commission is studying a model ordinance based off of what's in place statewide as well as a local model from Hudson, Iowa.
