Volunteers scoured the Cedar Valley recreational trails this weekend to ensure users aren’t greeted with an eyesore this spring.
Cedar Valley Cyclists and the Cedar Trails Partnership held their annual Earth Day trail cleanup event Saturday morning, picking up litter and debris at trail locations throughout the Waterloo and Cedar Falls trail system.
“It’s just something we’ve been doing for 10 years plus to help honor the community,” said Eric Penning, president of Cedar Valley Cyclists. “It’s usually a little fun. We always talk about what we find.”
Nate and Steffoni Schmidt of Cedar Falls brought their 2-year-old son, David, for the event, joining about 40 volunteers who gathered in the Veridian Credit Union parking lot at U.S. Highway 63 and Ansborough Avenue.
“As a family we’re looking for ways that we can give back to the community and thought this was a good place to start,” Nate Schmidt said. “Plus, it’s been a long winter. It’s nice to get out and be around people outside of the house.”
