Patrons of a soon-to-open sports bar near downtown Des Moines can chiefly count on getting the Royal treatment.

Full Court Press Inc. will open Truman’s KC Pizza Tavern on March 15 in the old Margarita’s location at 400 SE Sixth St. The new restaurant and bar will debut at 11 a.m. — just in time for those first-round NCAA Tournament games — and will feature a hefty dose of Kansas City sports memorabilia.

The name is a nod to the Truman Sports Complex in Kansas City, Mo., where three Full Court Press owners — Rob Jackson, Andy Massoth and Dan Massoth — grew up and have been longtime fans of the area's sports teams.

Truman’s atmosphere and beer offerings will have a Kansas City vibe, said Andy Massoth.

The retro bar features Kansas City Chiefs booths and autographed items from Super Bowl IV, in which the Chiefs beat the Minnesota Vikings 23-7. In addition, there is memorabilia from the Kansas City Royals, along with past franchises in the Monarchs (Negro Leagues), Kings (NBA) and Scouts (NHL).

Bar offerings feature 10 taps (of 24) featuring beer from Kansas City-based Boulevard Brewing Co. The food menu includes hand-tossed pizza, sandwiches and appetizers. A limited breakfast menu will be available on Saturday and Sunday mornings.

The tavern seats about 80. Expanded outdoor seating and parking will be added in the spring, owners said.

Full Court Press operates Buzzard Billy’s, el Bait Shop, Fong’s Pizza, Hessen Haus, High Life Lounge, The Library Cafe, The Royal Mile, The Red Monk and the Iowa Taproom.
