From Carl Voss as shared in the Central Iowa Bike-Ped Roundtable earlier this month:
Des Moines Area Regional Transit Authority (DART) is having a good problem regarding the popularity of bike racks on DART buses: some passengers have to wait until the next DART bus because the rack is full. This is happening regularly on six routes.
The next round of DART bus purchases, DART will look at upgrading to racks to hold three bikes (current version is two bikes).
Some cities allow riders to wheel bikes onto the bus during non-peak hours. DART drivers haven’t approved that yet here in DM.
DART bike rack usage is up 7.25% over last year same period.
In May alone, 9,238 uses. You may recall that when the MTA sought federal funding for the bike racks in 2005, the staff projected 7,145 annual usages.
