Position Summary
The Des Moines Bicycle Collective seeks a qualified and enthusiastic community bike shop mechanic. This person will be in a key role working with volunteers, repairing bicycles and providing customer service. The position includes daily shop operations and sales, ensuring outstanding customer service, developing staff and volunteers, and promoting our community bike shop’s development and growth.

Primary Responsibilities

1. Recondition/overhaul bicycles of all types and conditions for resale, giveaway and shop (40%)

Be a community resource by helping people of all means ride more bikes

Evaluate, process and repair donation bicycles

Installation of accessories, racks, lights, tires and etc.

Ensure a clean and organized work environment

Maintaining an active inventory for new refurbished bicycles and donated items

2. Education and Sales (25%)

Interact with customers to determine specific needs and present possible solutions.

Help customers find and install parts

Educate and demonstrate bicycle repair

Closing and opening storefront procedures

Cash register daily counting and accounting

Actively maintain order and organization in the shop

3. Help oversee shop activates and volunteer development (25%)

Able to train, motivate and supervise volunteers

Educate and demonstrate correct processes for bicycle repair

Participate in staff and shop meetings

Help maintain a positive shop atmosphere with a focus on safety and education

Make sure hours are recorded correctly for volunteers

4. Participate in community events and other marketing and volunteer efforts (10%)

Represent the Des Moines Bicycle Collective in community outreach events

Recruit, train and retain shop volunteers

Other duties as assigned
