IOWA CITY, Iowa (KCRG-TV9)-A Coe College professor became the eighth person to die in a bike crash this year in Iowa after he was hit by a pick-up truck early Tuesday morning.

Dan Lehn, 58, was hit from behind near the intersection of Highway 965 and Meadow Road NE, according to the State Patrol. The cause of the crash remains under investigation.

According to data from the Iowa Bicycle Coalition, eight Iowans have died in bicycle crashes this year. From 2011 to 2015 the average number of bicycle fatalities in Iowa was four.

"Half of the fatal crashes involve motor vehicles failing to yield when passing the bicycle. We need a safe passing distance law requiring vehicles to change lanes to pass. We need to end unsafe driving with increased penalties and appropriate reckless driving charges," the coalition said on a recent petition on their website.

The organization is pushing legislatures to pass tougher laws with their "petition to end fatal bike crashes."
