While Kraft Heinz’s new Davenport plant isn’t expected to open for another year and a half, one employee mapped out his future route to work there this week.

Tom Swarm, a longtime mechanic atthe downtown Davenport institution, has bicycled most nights over the last 16 years of his career to his third-shift job.

"I've only been late for work once, and that was for a flat tire last summer," said Swarm, whose commute from his Bettendorf home stretches about seven miles. "It only takes an extra 15 minutes, and since you're out in the open, it wakes you up and you get to see a lot more of the world."

And if there’s ever a time to bike to work, next week is it.May 16-20 marks National Bike to Work Week and the Quad-Cities Bicycle Club and more than 15 area businesses are hoping to entice people to get out on their wheels with free breakfast stops and special discounts.
