DES MOINES, Iowa – May is Bike Month, and that has people hitting the streets and trails. The Des Moines Bicycle Collective hosts events throughout the month of May to get people on their bikes. There's one group organizers really want to get comfortable on two wheels.

Andrea Metzler likes seeing the city from the seat of her bike. She said, "I live downtown, so I ride around downtown a lot, and there's really easy access to the trails from downtown.

She bought her bike from the Des Moines Bicycle Collective last year. That's where she also learned to take care of it. "They taught me how to clean my chain and grease it up and change a tire and change a flat,” she said.

The Des Moines Bicycle Collective is trying to increase female ridership. "The numbers nationally are women are only 10 percent of the riders, but that's because they don't feel comfortable on a bike,” said Community Outreach Coordinator Kimberley Boggus.
