A metro Des Moines lawyer says he believes five tickets issued to cyclists over the weekend will not hold up in court.

Iowa DNR officer Jeremy King issued five cyclists tickets for not stopping at stop sign near the Viceroy Trail on Saturday. Officer King said in a three-hour period, he noticed 21 bikers ignore the stop signs.

"We can do better than this. We need to stop at these intersections and do a better job for everybody’s sake,” King told Local 5’s Chris Oswalt. “Without a doubt it is a safety issue."

Neighbors who live in the area say they have seen several cyclists run the stop signs and they worry about an accident.

"I look at it like this, those stops signs are there for a reason,” Scott Chatman said. “If one of those bicyclists got hit by a car going 55 mph that is end of story."

Des Moines attorney and cyclists says he does not think the tickets will hold up in court.
