HECK YEAH DES MOINES !!!

Des Moines is moving forward with a half-million-dollar plan for a more walkable and bike-friendly downtown.

The city is sending out a request for proposal for a 12-month impact study to test mobility recommendations presented this spring by Jeff Speck, a national urban planner and architect. It will coincide with a pilot program that will reconfigure traffic patterns on 12th Street and remove parking restrictions on other roads beginning this summer.

The goal is better streets for pedestrians and cyclists.

The study will look at things like converting one-way streets to two-way; reducing the number of vehicle-travel lanes and lane widths to make room for cyclists; and removing peak-hour parking restrictions.
