Little step by step, Jeff gray of Onawa, Iowa is trying to recover after a devastating accident days ago.

On June 20th, he and his close friend 47 year old Shawn Gosch of Onawa went out on a bike ride near Manson, Iowa.

Jeff took the lead with Shawn behind him, but six miles in the unthinkable happened.

"I woke up in the ditch and my foot was hurting, and it took me a few minutes before I realized what had happened. I kept asking where’s my buddy at?" said Jeff.

His buddy Shawn who was right behind him was hit by a car.

Jeff survived with a broken foot, rib and separated shoulder.

"I’m very fortunate also very lucky, and my buddy wasn't."

The two had been friends for years with cycling bringing them close together.

Shawn was on the Onawa Chamber of Commerce and CFO of the local hospital.

"It has a devastating impact on the entire community,” said Jeff.

Jeff said they were being cautious cyclists but somehow that wasn't enough.

For all drivers, he pushes one message:

Be safe, watchful, and share the road carefully.

"All the cyclists out there are normal, everyday people that live out there in these communities. People need to be aware of that. We're not out there to slow traffic down. Just be careful."

The investigation on the accident is still on-going and charges have yet to be made.

As for Gray, he's hoping to be healed and possibly back on a bike by the end of the summer.
