The portion of Clive’s Greenbelt Trail by the 86th Street bridge should be cleaned up and passable for trail users by around 1 p.m. Wednesday, said Kelly Canfield, parks and recreation director.

Canfield said the part of the trail affected by Walnut Creek is the lowest part of the paved path and rises very quickly after rains.

During a year with average precipitation, it’s not unusual for the portion of the trail by the 86th street bridge to be closed a few times, he added.

A portion of Clive’s Greenbelt Trail has been closed after several days of heavy rains soaked Iowa.

Clive public works director Bart Weller said a section of the trail located by a bridge on Northwest 86th street has been closed due to the mess left by water from the overflowing Walnut Creek.

Signage and gates were put in place, alerting trail users about an alternate path, Weller said.

Clive’s parks and recreation director Kelly Canfield said the the trail would reopen after crews cleared mud from path. The affected section of the trail could be opened sometime Tuesday afternoon, Canfield said. “It just kind of depends what’s going to happen on the rain,” he added.

Weller said he and Fire Chief Rick Roe would be attending a meeting with Polk County officials Tuesday afternoon on how the onslaught of rain will affect streams in the area.
