The Drake-area coffee shop Mars Cafe closed last month, ending a six year run at 2318 University Ave. But the shop’s Facebook page has still been active the last few weeks. Fans who checked out the page this morning (or looked at the shop’s front door) saw a date posted: “9/15/2012?

The shop has been purchased by a group including Amedeo Rossi, Justin Schoen, Mark Movic and Angela Johnson. I spoke with Schoen and Rossi today and will bemeeting up with the new owners tomorrow morning and will post more information then. Rossi confirmed that Sept. 15 is the shop’s targeted opening date, with a larger grand re-opening celebration to follow.

Rossi co-owns the Vaudeville Mews and is the project manager for the 80/35 Music Festival. Schoen is the DMMC’s board president and Johnson is a board member. Given their ties to the music scene, is should be no surprise that Rossi said they are looking to continue the coffee shop’s tradition of live music with Mars Cafe 2.0.

BIKEIOWA NOTE

Mars Cafe was the long time starting spot for the CranksGiving Food Bank Charity ride. We are glad to see Amedeo and crew keep it open and grow the music scece!! I'm sure they will remain biker-friendly too!
