Make way for more bikes and slower traffic along Ingersoll
Avenue.
Monday night, the Des Moines City Council approved a
controversial plan to change the lanes along Ingersoll.
Next spring, crews will paint new lines for parking lanes,
two bike lanes, two traffic lanes and a center turning
lane. The idea is to slow traffic down and prevent traffic
accidents. But critics say slower traffic could be bad for
business.
“You're putting bike lanes down the middle of Ingersoll, I
just can’t imagine you would do that, there will be a ghost
town on Ingersoll,” said Des Moines resident Joe
Grandanette.
Des Moines City Councilmember Chris Hensley disagreed.
“We don't want to do anything to be harmful to business. We
are here because we want to help business. We've got a huge
investment on Ingersoll, “ said Hensley.
The city will monitor traffic daily and if the new lines
create traffic jams, they'll return to four lanes of
traffic.
