Polk County Jail Chief Leesa Shoemaker continues to recover
at home from injuries received in a car-bicycle accident
near Polk City on May 12.
She spent a little more than a week in the hospital.
Sheriff's Deputy Jana Rooker said a ticket for failure to
properly overtake a vehicle was issued to the driver of the
car, Jerry Culbertson, 57 of Bagley.
Sheriff's officials said the accident happened on Iowa
Highway 415 south of Polk City when Bagley' vehicle struck
the southbound bicycle about 4:30 a.m..
Shoemaker suffered serious injuries in the accident. She
was wearing a helmet at the time. Rooker said the helmet
likely saved her life.
Polk County Sheriff Bill McCarthy said earlier that
Shoemaker frequently rode to work on her bicycle. He said
she had blinking lights on her clothing when she was hit in
the early morning.
