WEST DES MOINES, Iowa -- More than 50 bicyclists pushed pedals for hours inside Jordan Creek Town Center on Saturday. The riders stayed perched on stationary bikes for three hours to help raise money in the fight against cancer. Mercy Cancer Center and the local chapter of the Livestrong Foundation staged the event in hopes that the bicyclists would get a lot of attention from onlooke In addition to putting on a show, organizers offered free information about cancer screening and detection. "As a cancer physician, it's really my privilege to take care of so many wonderful people who have inspired me every day," said Dr. Dick Deming. "It's beyond what I anticipated," said cancer survivor Bill Throckmorton. "This was one of those wild ideas that you have, and now to see it and all the people participating is really great." Some of the bicyclists said they expected to ride up to 60 miles during the three-hour event. The cancer awareness campaign continues on Sunday. There won't be any bicycling, but Iowa Chops players will sign autographs between 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.
