TODAY: (Updated 12:01 p.m.) DENISON, Iowa — A lawsuit filed by the family of a Davenport man who died when his bicycle crashed during an annual bicycle ride across Iowa in 2004 has been settled, attorneys in the case said. Betti Jo Ullrich filed the lawsuit earlier this year against Crawford County seeking damages for the death of her husband who died after he lost control of his bicycle on a Crawford County road on July 25, 2004, during RAGBRAI. The lawsuit claimed Kirk Ullrich, 49, crashed his bicycle after the front tire fell into a gap on the road, causing him to lose control. He was taken to a Sioux City hospital where he later died. The crash happened about three hours after another rider crashed on the same road and had to be taken to a hospital. Ullrich's family claims in the lawsuit that Crawford County was negligent in maintaining the road. G. Daniel Gildemeister of Sioux City, who represents Crawford County in the case, said the lawsuit was settled for $350,000 with the money being paid from the Iowa Communities Assurance Pool.
