Des Moines bike racing team selected to develop Olympic cyclists

Colorado Springs, CO – USA Cycling Development Foundation has designated the Des Moines Cycle Club Race Team as a 2007 Center of Excellence for athlete development. The designation includes a cash grant to assist the team in their training and development of potential Olympic cycling athletes. “We’re very happy to have a Center of Excellence in Iowa,” said Steve McCauley, executive director of the foundation. “There were two riders on the 2004 Olympic cycling team that had lived in Iowa, Jason McCartney and Christine Thorburn. Hopefully through this Center of Excellence program there will be more from Iowa in the future.” McCauley said the Des Moines Cycle Club Race Team was selected because they have developed a program to foster the talent of young cyclists. The team currently has three USA Cycling licensed coaches who work with the riders. As of late December, the team had 50 riders signed for the 2007 race season, including five junior riders (18 or under) who are actively racing, and several unsigned juniors who will begin racing once they reach 10 years old. They are seeking two to three more young riders to complete their junior squad for 2007. The team is currently preparing for the 2007 racing season. They train indoors as a team once a week at Team Fitness Training Center in Urbandale, and outside on weekends when weather permits.
