On Saturday, March 4 the Iowa City Bike Library will reopen its doors for the 2006 cycling season. The volunteer-run Bike Library refurbishes donated bicycles and then checks them out for a small deposit for a six-month period. The deposit is returned to the patron when the bike is returned tothe library within the six months. Any damage beyond normal wear is paid for by the deposit. Patrons may choose to keep their checked-out bicycles longer than six months, in which case the deposit becomes payment. The Bike Library uses money accrued from forfeit deposits to maintain the repair and check-out system. Donations of bicycles to the Bike Library are tax-deductible. Besides being one of the most affordable forms of transportation, bicycles promote personal health, have a small impact on the natural environment and require very little space for parking and storage. The Bike Library, 408 E. College St., will be open for bicycle check-out and will accept donations every Saturday from 10am to 1pm.
