a one-man operation opens a nano-brewery and sells good beers to good local bars and restaurants

Please Welcome BackRoad Brewery as BIKEIOWA's newest sponsor.

BackRoad Brewery is a small brewery located downtown Carlisle and our unofficial Tap Room is located across the street from us in Back Alley Smokehouse where there will be 6 beers on tap all the time.

"I want to be known as a good brewery that makes various unique big flavored beers in small batches." say Eric Moorman who owns BackRoad Brewery.

The name BackRoad came about because Eric lives outside Carlisle on 10 acres which has gravel road. So BackRoad Brewery is because Eric is a small town brewery on back roads of Iowa.

BackRoad uses natural aquafier water from Carlisle to make their Flagship and new seasonal beers.

They self distribute to 15 locations in around Des Moines Metro area and they love to make beers that are unique and people like to drink. Local beers with local food is their mantra.

Back Alley Smokehouse in Carlisle is the "unofficial taproom" and is 2 blocks north of the Summerset Trail head.

It’s the fresh local beers on tap and the creativity being a nano brewery is what allows them to offer unique flavors.

Bicycle Friendly

"The Iowa biking community is made up from a large and diverse group. They are people who share a passion for biking and socialization along the trails. Bikers have never met a person they didn't interact with. That's the demographic that enjoys and appreciates craft beers. Iowa bikers are also very philanthropic for causes. My brewery has already donated to H8 cancer foundation Guns and Hoses Hockey game, Carlisle PTA fundraiser and Carlisle Dollars for Scholars." ~ Eric

Backroad is working to get bicycle racks and the Smokehouse is only 100 yards from the police station.

About Eric, the Brewmaster

Eric Moorman started home brewing 6 years ago and decided in 2016 to open a nano brewery which was made a reality on Jun 19th 2017.

Eric is a one man operation. He comes up with recipes, brews beer, kegs the beer, deliveries, clean the tap lines and offers samples for new customers.

Eric has been a Des Moines Police Officer since1992 and served in Cedar Rapids as a Police Officer before that. He server 6 years in the Marine Corps Military Police and was stationed in Japan and Saudi Arabia/Kuwait in Persian Gulf War.

He has been married for 32 years and grew up on an Indianola Quarter Horse Farm training and showing horses across US.

Eric's favorite beer is the "Honey I'm Home" IPA (grapefruit and local honey). Even people scared of an IPA love this beer. It was on the Iowa Beer Bus last RAGBRAI and it sold out in under 1.5 hours.

If you stop and eat at Back Alley Smokehouse, Eric's favorite meal is the brisket sandwich with raspberry chipotle sauce. He says "anything with the brisket is awesome. Just small town BBQ with local brewed beers."

Where can you get Backroad Brewery beers?

Their Tap Room of 6 rotating beers is located inside Back Alley Smokehouse 90 School St, Carlisle, Iowa.
